Artist's Comments

This tutorial is meant for people who have never touched a crochet hook before and should teach you everything you need to make a scarf.

The stitch featured here is one of my favorites: half-double crochet (may be known by a different name outside the US). It's not too airy of a stitch (like double or triple crochet), and you can make stuff a hell of a lot quicker with it than with single crochet.

If anyone absolutely needs to know how to make single or double crochet, it's easy enough to pick those up from half-double.
For single crochet, leave off the first yarn over on each stitch.
For double crochet, pull the final yarn over through only the two loops next to it, then yarn over again and pull that loop through the last two loops.

This is also my first tutorial. If any part of this thing doesn't make sense, please tell me!

Also: for those interested in how I did the color changes in this tutorial, then yarn itself is dyed in multiple colors, so the color changes happen on their own. I chose that particular yarn because it's a heck of a lot easier to see the individual stitches with it than with a single-colored yarn. Besides, I've crocheted with multiple colors before and it's a pain in the ass and definitely not something a person whose never crocheted before would want to deal with!

For those of you interested in art more of a real 3D nature, or those wondering just how it's done, here is How to Crochet by ~VolensVivarium, which shows you the basics of crotchet work that anyone can do. (Suggested by `dedredhed and Featured by `bleedsopretty)

Yeah, I've been searching through the tutorials for one for a while now. The only thing I've found that is close to a tutorial is some technical diagrams showing how to hold the hook and such.

And thanks for the fav!

May I just say...this totally made sense to me. I think a big part of it was in your notes ABOUT the tutorial--the difference between half-double, double, and single just hadn't gotten through my brain until you listed the differences. Now I can do all three with ease, as though I've been doing them all my life.

So you know? I picked up a crochet hook for the first time two days ago. I started by looking at the website for the Crochet Guild of America and their tutorial SUCKED after the first part about how to make a chain. Then I asked my friend at the LYS to show me, and her instructions helped but still didn't quite jive for me. Your tut, however, made all the difference in the world. Thanks for a great tutorial!!

SO faving this. :D

~drakonlily: alright, I'll say it. I missed your pretty boys.

~drakonlily to ~Sorda: Well, I may make you play your namesake, for the sake of her being your namesake.

Damn...and here I thought I was a downright horrible crochet instructor! I've always had issues explaining how to crochet (or make macrame bracelets...or lanyards...gotta love being the artsy camp counselor!) in person, but I guess when I write things down, it makes a difference. Or maybe it's because this thing is teaching high schoolers and up, instead of my psychotic 11-year old campers.

But yeah. It really makes me happy to know that this thing really helped you. Like, damn. =)

And thanks for the fav!

Great tutorial! I already know how to crochet, but this will be really useful in teaching my little sisters how to. =)
